I suggest you go to MEXICO, Jeanny! It's less expensive, and different...Your niece will understand...Just send her gift and your sincere congratulations...At least, you get to accomplish two things...Please her and your husband, and enjoy!

Jeanie,

I'd go w/ Elz idea. To please your hubby and his family. And the trip to Pinas is so expensive. Give her a beautiful gift. Pasalubong and such. Whatever you too decide it's for the best...

jean 1000, if I'm in your place, I may choose to visit the niece. The reason is the childran ( Young lady ) is too proud of her graduation and they wanna the nearest and the dearest to see while on the stage.... this is in my own experience, I'm saying.Husband's family re union is personally for you is not too interested ( which may offend, but from the heart that's the fact ), it's just to please your husband.... but sure he may understand which is important to you.... Sorry, it's my view.

I am not being insensitive or harsh, but your niece will graduate with or without you...If you were her parents, it's a MUST that you attend it, but when it comes to priority, your hubby and your family here is NUMERO UNO!...So Viva MEXICO!

Jeanny, Jeanny....you have NO IDEA, how hard it is to be a Balikbayan these days in Pinas...Our culture is such that we are EXPECTED to bring pasalubong to ALL our relatives, plus the friends...My American-German niece who was with us during Erma's wedding gave me and her mom (my eldest sister) a sermon, saying: "Aren't you insulted that each time you go home, people are NOT really excited to see you again, but more of WHAT YOU BROUGHT for them as gifts?"...True or not true, but she has a point there...5 Balikbayan boxes were not enough, believe you me..

I love to give gifts, believe me, but there are times, I feel so sad because no matter how fair I try, my relatives sometimes fight because one got a better gift than the other (or so, they think) and it's hard to please them...I'd rather gift my friends, who appreciate what I have for them no matter what it is...My friends in Cebu are always excited and happy to see me...ANd they even show me around and give me treats...Of course, I have simple token of friendships for them as well... I had more fun there..

Just call me ELZ

why don't you get your niece a visa to Mexico and a r/t ticket instead, as a graduation gift? might be easier and cheaper than for you and your family to go to the Pinas.
