right after lunch yesterday, with a check in my hand, off i went to the company president's room down the hallway (exactly 6 doors away from ours) to have the check signed on. along the way, i met a co-worker who told me that the company president was in the photocopying room down stair.

i went directly to the photocopying room and of course, i was not surprised to see the president there. what i did not expect though was seeing him fixing the photocopying machine (a very minor paper jammed trouble and obviously, it was him who caused it) while two of my lady co-workers were waiting in line.

innocently (and in good faith), i offered help. and suddenly, i stepped closer to the machine and started "analyzing and solving the problem." (hey, i was used to doing that in manila---helping not just the president but everybody/anybody at work). to my surprise, one of my lady co-workers around pulled me out of there and whispered, "let him do it! he can fix it!"

i have been working for 15 years (14.5 of it was in the Phils.) and honestly, i am not used to seeing a company owner/president in his white long sleeve and expensive tie doing something technical at the office, let alone fixing a photocopying machine and have his hands filled with toner. my experience yesterday was the first and giving a hand was not to impress anyone. it's the filipino culture in me...i just wanted to help.

*** in the philippines, company president/owners are VERY, VERY, VERY SPOILED! they don't photocopy or fax document out. they don't make their own coffee. they don't make phone calls. employees do all these things for them!

i think it is all our (employees) fault that we let them use and abuse us to the max...for a very poor salary! but i guess it's not yet too late to tell them to start learning all these stuff. they are the ones who make good money, anyway!

what if they refuse? they should consider bringing their own housemaid at work.

last sunday... at least for an hour.

though it's still spring and the sunshine's not yet in it's hottest, we decided to have a short jet ski ride last sunday. as usual, i was wearing my favorite wet suit which i also wear during summer time when the temperature is in the 90's. only this time, it didn't totally shield me from the cool water of the columbia river. the sun was up but the wind that blowing against us was not warm enough for my used-to-tropical-country body. but even if it was not as fun as when we do it on summertime (when you would not mind being exposed to waves because of the grilling heat of the sun), the ride was more emotional (!?) and sentimental.

yes, it was both emotional and sentimental. it would be the jet ski's last few hours with us. it will be up for sale soon!

is recommended!

i came across this photo of mine while i was looking at my "not so old pictures" earlier today. i could not help but giggle every time i see this pic. thinking it's more silly and fun than "bastos", i thought of sharing it in this corner. wala lang po...

anyways, this was taken when we visited my parents in-law in upstate new york 10 months ago. we were in my in-law's huge farm when i had to go wee-wee. with no shed to hide from and the restroom being too far, i decided to relieve myself right where i was. what the heck? no one was around except me and my husband who laughingly chased me with his flashing digicam!

i wonder how the war started. i don't even understand why there is war at all. it's just so deafening and disheartening to hear the explosions and the firing of guns while thousands of lifeless bodies of our brothers and sisters continue to soar.

why can't we leave in peace?

i do believe that the only good thing about war is it's end... and i look forward to that day when this long nightmare would finally be over.

sung by lea salonga

I
ako'y munting tinig
may munting pangarap
samyo ng bulaklak
sa hanging malinis

II
may ngiti sa araw
at kung umuulan
makapagtampisaw malayang daigdig
ng kawalang malay

III
i am but a small voice
i have but a small dream
the fragrance of the flow'r
in the unpolluted air

i am but a small voice
i have but a small dream
to smile upon the sun
be free to dance and sing
be free to sing my song to everyone (everywhere)

chorus:
come young citizens of the world
we are one, we are one
come young citizens of the world
we are one, we are one

we have one hope
we have one dream
and with one voice
we sing

coda:
peace, prosperity
and love for all mankind

*instrumental*

i am but a small voice
i have but a small dream
to smile upon the sun
be free to dance and sing
be free to sing my song to everyone

come young citizens of the world
we are one , we are one
come young citizens of the world
we are one, we are one

we have one hope
we have one dream
and with one voice
we sing....we sing..

peace, prosperity
and love for all mankind
peace, prosperity
and love for all mankind.

...and so proud to be one!

the ladies/grandmas at work (my co-workers/officemates) were the ones who introduced me to the business of "professional hooking." they have been persuading me to join them since i started working for Ford more than 2 months ago. honestly, i was not interested at all the first time. what i wanted to do that time was to do my job and waste no single second since i was just hired. besides, i don't want to do what these ladies were doing. but u know, they were very persistent. they would pursue me during office hours, even during coffee time and lunch break. how i wish i could tell them to give me a break! the "wooing" went on and on everyday to the point i could no longer take the pressures. to have my peace of mind back (coz they would not want to leave me alone), and out of respect and "pakikisama," i finally joined them 2 weeks ago. gosh, you had no idea how happy i made them that time.

anyway, the training only lasted for almost 5 minutes. it was done behind closed door, right there in one of Ford's offices. one good thing about it is i didn't spend a single cent. (even up to now, everything i use and need is provided by them). i am more like an industrial member.

well, i would say it's not difficult to learn the craft. one has to be willing and patient though. but what i found really surprising is that just a few minutes after i was introduced to it, i found myself enjoying it sooo much. oh yes, i am now one of the "certified professional hookers" at the biggest Ford dealership in the city.

by the way, did i tell you yet that to be a "" is noble yet cheap? yes, everything you need is just a CROCHET HOOK, a ROLL of YARN and a PAIR of WILLING HANDS and you're rockin'!

note: in the pic is my first project as a ""...lol. it is a kitty blanket and will be donated later to the humane society.

my hair...

i have eyebrows that are arched aristocratically (i'm not aristocrat though), a little wider nose (blame my ancestors he he he) and a slightly bigger mouth (ha ha ha). what makes me feel good though is that what people first notice about me is my long, straight, black, lustrous, silky hair. hmmm, i'm still thinking for more adjectives...lol! well, i can only do it here so, please, let me brag about it, ok?

while others are gifted with beautiful skin, finer facial features or a perfect pair of legs, i am thankful i am blessed with beautiful hair. it was not actually that beautiful when i was in grade school and about to approach high school. it used to be light brown, very unmanageable and heavily plagued with split ends. thanks to my mother who regularly massaged my scalp and nourished my hair with coconut oil (and occasional coconut milk, too), until i was old and not lazy enough to do it myself.

while some women spend much for hair spa, straightening, rebonding and other hair beautifying stuff, i just follow a simple regimen for my hair: regular application of coconut oil a few hours before i take a shower, shampoo and conditioner. a hair dryer/blower is a big NO! i don't remember ever visiting any salon to have more than just hair trim. my hair also does not need constant combing or brushing. once in the morning or right after a shower is enough and running my fingers through it wonderfully takes care of my hair the rest of the day.

the disadvantage of having this kind of hair is that i tend to have the same hairstyle all my life: just straight whether it is short or long, unless, of course, i have it curled. i find curly hair sexier but it's really not for me. chemicals easily damage my hair and it becomes as rough as a hay. layered hair style, which purpose is to create an illusion of a much thicker hair does not do justice either. shaggy slightly works but you know, it's still straight, only with some touch of style. oh, no, please don't tell me to shave it off or sport a flat top for a change.

anyways, i'm happy with the way my hair is. i plan to grow it looooonger and i have no plan to have it trimmed until its looooong enough to donate it (the cut portion) to the national cancer society.

i always have a great time at work. aside from the good company of the american men and women i work with, my everyday "assignments" are less complicated than what i used to do in the philippines. this is the kind of job i have been looking for, at least for now. I have lighter work load---and it means lesser responsibility! i don't wanna go back to that stage of my life again when BIR audits and the pressure of finishing financial reports would give me sleepless nights. i hated those weekends when i had to go to work when i was supposed to be spending time with family and friends.

yes, it is a big treat that i have a good, stress-free part time job now that does not only enable me to pay the bills but also allows me to spend quality time with my family and friends and still lets me enjoy the other finer things in life.

i went to fred meyer right after work yesterday to have my watch fixed. when the repair guy told me it'll take him 10-15 mins to fix it (it was just actually the strap that needed to be adjusted), i decided to window shop for a while.

as i walked and looked around, i had this very good feeling when i saw this red and white "clearance sale" banner that brightly hang in one of the store's corners. believing i would be lucky enough to find something for me, i excitedly screamed "it's shopping time!"

anyway, when i got closer to the corner, i realized the items on sale were not blouses or slacks but mostly undergarments. they were 80%-90% off. though i still have new/unused pieces of them at home which i brought from the philippines, i thought it was a good deal to buy a few, or at least, a piece. so, i started to check out the bras one by one, brand by brand, shelf by shelf. it was not easy but i was optimistic i could find one that fits me. a few mins later, an american lady customer approached me. "sweetie, i'm afraid this section is not for you," she said in a casual tone yet sincere enough not to embarrass me. she had this shy smile when i looked at her. she's almost 3 times my size. "i guess you know what i meant," she continued as she was unfolding a bra which one cup alone is enough to hold my whole smiley face.

as if it was the ultimate sign for me to give up, i smiled back at her, said my thanks and slowly walked away.
