we visited aunt laura in the nursing home for the second time yesterday. it was great to see her again though the meeting was not really pleasant. all she did was cry. she was so emotional that she hardly noticed the pajamas we brought her. all she said the whole time was how she missed her family and how she desperately longed for the home she used to live in with pam and two teenage grandsons.

visiting aunt laura was my idea but i ended up blaming and scolding myself for doing so. her miserable condition just tore my heart into pieces. and when we kissed her goodbye, gosh, how i wanted to bring her home! she was still sobbing when we left.

i suddenly remembered my mom who, at 74, lives happily with my married sister, gratefully appreciates my and my other siblings' love and support and enjoys the silliness as well as the thoughtfulness of my nieces and nephews.

thank GOD my mom will NEVER ever have the same plight.

*aunt laura has been widowed for almost two decades now. her marriage with my late uncle claude was almost perfect and to have only pam was such a blessing to them. theirs was a happy and content family until uncle claude died. it devastated aunt laura. then, pam got married and had . and everything was never the same again.

everybody knows how married life (and eventually divorce), raising , living with an elderly mom and a full time job can be very stressful. and pam's was no exception. when she thought her responsibilities were bigger than her, she decided to give up aunt laura for the nursing home. it was sad but she thought it was the best thing to do.*

mirror... mirror on the wall...

if you'll see our house, one of the first thing that you will notice is the presence of nicely framed huge mirrors mounted on our walls. it is not just one, not two, not three, but a total of seven and they are distributed in the different rooms in the house. i have always liked mirrors (not on the ceiling though...lol). when friends ask me why, i could not give them a concrete answer. no, i'm not vain. i just like it.

well, to give you an update, everything has changed when i saw "what lies beneath" for the second time last weekend. what is the mirror's relevance to it? there are some scenes in the movie where michelle pfeiffer, the lead actress in the said pic, always sees the image of a missing/murdered woman every time she faces their bathroom mirror. (the woman's killer happened to be michelle's husband played by harrison ford). the image's not pretty though. it's the kind that will make you hide under the sheet. those scenes didn't affect me the first time but they got into me last weekend. and now they're haunting me. every time i had to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, when all lights are off, i am so afraid to glance at the mirror. when i do, even my own reflection scares the hell out of me.

i am not sure if my husband will like it but i plan to put the bathroom mirror down. SOON.

nothing's wrong with my taste bud...

i like apple/s (yes, the fruit!) but i don't and can't appreciate apple pie and apple juice. i really love the cinnamon roll (of cinnabon) but it's weird how just the smell of cinnamon in almost all food (except cinnamon roll) makes me vomit.

i have a very sensitive taste bud that it, most of the times, doesn't appreciate unfamiliar food or stuff that i didn't (normally) eat back in the philippines. how i envy those people who can almost eat anything with gusto!

i do understand that, like how unique my own fingerprints are from others, i have a taste bud that is very much unique from the rest. yeah, it always disappoints me but i know it should not stop me from trying out foreign dishes. and i believe that the best way to do it is to introduce this weird taste bud of mine to all these food little by little until it gets used to them. anyways, practice is what makes everything perfect.

nanay narcisa & the pampano fish...

while waiting for my husband to give me a ride after work yesterday, i decided to go with a pinay co-worker, alicia, whose house is just 3 mins away from the office. so i called my husband (who carpools with me every tuesday and thursday) and told him to just pick me up at alicia's house.

it was my second time at alicia's house but my first time to meet her mother in-law, nanay narcisa who was in minnesota when i first visited. i was just so excited to personally meet her to thank her for all the filipino food she always sends through alicia.

nanay narcisa was in the kitchen doing some "pampano" fishes when we arrived. i chose to kiss her than make "mano" and she was as excited as i was as she held a pair of scissors with her wet hands. as i watched her, i couldn't help but remember my mom who does "pampanos" and any other fishes the same way nanay narcisa does: they both cut fins, tails and ears and make a slanted cut on each side/s of the fish's body for the oil to penetrate. they also both blow softly each side/s of the fish's body so it won't stick in the frying pan. oh my, they are both superstitious!

i went home full and with some cooked "mongo" and fried "pampanos" for lunch the next day.

a lot of things happened recently that made me step back and think about life. my husband was not able to fly due to hypertension; my mom had eye problem that needs to be taken care of immediately; my unmarried brother was diagnosed of serious kidney problem; plus other small things that just piled up and accumulated. amidst all these, i found myself quitting my job at Ford - the job that i was talking about with so much fondness just a few months earlier.

i am tough--- but when it comes to my family, i am the most vulnerable wife, and sister one can ever imagine. at first i thought these trials were too much for me to handle. my spirit almost collapsed. it was just soooo amazing how, after i surrendered everything to the ONE up there, things got lighter and better. HE really is in full control of everything.

my husband's health condition has stabilized and he's now back to flying. my mom just had a series of eye check up and is now doing pretty good. my brother is now undergoing a 2x a week kidney dialysis (and is waiting for a kidney donor). and yours truly? i got a new full time job that has more benefits, pays better and gives me the opportunity to work with 2 fellow filipinos.

in general, i find life still good.

...when you see people just wearing flip flops; when you are welcomed by that scolding hot temperature when you get in your car that has been parked in the sun for hours; when ice cream are selling like hot cakes and resort businesses are topping the chart; when caucasian women are getting a tan while asian ladies shield themselves from the sun; etc.

whew! mr. sunshine has been up and so bright lately. people often complain of too much heat and though it also gets into my nerves, it only bothers me a tiny bit. the fact is i love it. i love the outdoor when it's hot. i just love the sunshine when it touches my skin!

yeah, summer is my favorite season of the year. and like what i've said time and again, i really love it even though some days are hotter than the hottest hell.

a silly email from my best friend today reminded me of a silly thing we did (some 20 months ago) while i was still in manila.

are u ready for it???

mama litz, as i fondly call my best friend, showed up at our apartment in cubao late one night. carrying a small traveling bag, i knew right away there was something wrong. she had a fight with her sister and needed a place to stay! knowing i could not accommodate her coz the room i was sharing with my sister was small and had no extra bed plus i had 2 nieces with us that time (while the other room was being occupied by my two officemates-boarders), i suddenly panicked. it was late and i didn't have the heart to send her away. after a quick "brainstorming" with her, we decided to combine our money together and talked about spending the night in a decent hotel close by. but gosh, our money wasn't enough for a hotel room! after another quick "brainstorming," we decided to just go to the newly built motel along edsa which is just a block away from the apartment. it was both our first time...it was quite "wa class" but we had no choice. it would only be for a few hours, anyway!

ok, to make the story a little shorter, we got a room for a little less than P600.00 and we both ordered chicken mami that tasted like shit. and here's the silly part. when we're already settled and mama litz (a little teary eyed) started to share her story with me, we were interrupted by a moan/scream of someone from the other room to the left and obviously a headboard banging against the wall from the room to the right. our eyes rolled and we both laughed quietly! we tried to stay "sane and calm" but we would be startled by something hitting our room walls. oh my, how could we get some sleep? we both have to go to work the next day! the "war" around us went on and on for hours and we found ourselves still wide awake when it's time for us to check out at 6am the next morning.

the moral of the story? a night in the motel will give you eye bags!!!

our jet ski's GONE!

we had it advertised over a month ago but the phone just wasn't ringing. so when this guy from salem, oregon finally showed up a few days ago, paid in cold cash and brought the jet ski home, we were so relieved. who would not be? though we like it so much and it made me enjoyed my first summer here in the US, it's not just practical to keep it. yes, we were relieved but it was weird that i was almost teary eyed when the buyer slowly pulled the jet ski (on a trailer) out of our garage.

well, i guess it's just time to let go. aside from the fact that we have now that extra room in the garage which the jet ski used to occupy (that was really meant for another car), we just bought a used awesome boat that's more like a small floating motor home. i am not complaining, huh!

i'll give you guys a peek of our small 'water home" later....
