Phoebe, this is not new to me...I've been in the USA for almost 20 years now, and each time, CNN and other news agencies always point out the negativities of the Philippines, including prostitution, dirty politics, poverty, brain drain, crimes and what have you...It doesn't surprise me anymore, and not that I am NOT affected, but there's very little that we can do to change that impression. RACISM and DISCRIMINATION is worldwide...I will continue to walk with my head up and look at those kind of people straight in the eye coz everyone has his/her own dirt no matter how they hide... Besides, our Philippine government has a lot of "fixing" to do, and I know that the truth hurts, but somehow, we do have moral and political responsibilities to what had happened. Just call me ELZ, click eb1209

But despite all these, everywhere we go, Filipinos stand out in terms of performance as workers, partners, and as professionals..Our kababayans, also make us proud..So, it's NOT ALL BAD! Just call me ELZ, click eb1209

P! With both my boys going to college taking up BS Criminology, this has greatly impacted their "vision" of building a career in law enforcement. So now, personally, I am not only hurt as a "Filipino" but also as mother of these two would-be police officers. This early in their college education/training, (first year, first sem), they are already getting negative comments from other students under different programs and from teachers too. (Is it time to shift courses?) How do we rise above the ashes? To be honest, they are not that terribly discouraged. If anything at all, they are getting more fired to do better and help reform the police force. Tall order. argue 4 ur limitations and true enough they are YOURS

On Friday, text messages had been exchanged saying that three maids had been killed, with one of them having acid splashed over her face. This is the most sickening sentence I've ever seen and I just hope and pray its not true especially when they HK people are shouting their throats out for JUSTICE. I understand their grief, but being cruel to Filipinos working in their country is too much. They only see the beast in Filipinos, but they can't see the monster in them!!! FILIPINOS CAN RISE... Let us joined hands in contributing for the improvement of our daily lives not because for what we WANT but for WHAT WE NEED!!! Farewell! God knows when we shall meet again.

Z2---i am still angry and don't want to start commenting much...good to hear from my Thai friends the positive feedbacks about this issue---that I don't have to be ashamed of what happened ...it could happen anywhere and to anyone. Thailand is well-known all over the world about the prostitution thing because its one of their major tourist attractions and its legal. May ID nga sila eh ...i am not looking for a "lusot" but those who are calling our nation as prosti too? They just have big mouths and never been out of their country to see it for real.Probably watching too much TV and a boring routine in the morning grab the newspaper and sip their coffee.Or maybe just the sex tourists who are bitter...LOL

Very well said friend. You handled this situation very well. You've the background knowledge of the nations concerned in this unfortunate incident. I for one is proud of being a Filipina. I'm always asked and always reply the same and when they ask for more I'll give them more information. Thankfully, no one has ever said anything disrespectful yet to my face. Only the evil eyes would give it away and anyone I notice like this I stay away clear of immediately. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() within each one of us, and let it begin with me (and each one of us)..one breath at a time.

i know what you are trying to say Zo, a lot of my european friends say the same thing. that its not fair to be labeled as such. we ar enot denying that we have a massive problem as a country, but for others to judge us for a mistake by one person is not fair. i remember during the bombing in Bali. a lot of tourists died there. did anyone branded indonesia as a nation of suicide bomber? like i said, this thing could happen to anyone anywhere in the world. so, 8 people died- for the record im also mourning with the family i used to work for in HK coz one of the casualties is a family friend- what do they want now? do they want to kill 8 pinoys too in exchange?? what happened to civilization?? are we going backwards?? we are not barbarians but why is it that some acts as one?

i have been to a lot of places. most of my school mates are still in school but im already working abroad moving from one country to another. yes, i have been to hot spots and i have been to good places. i dont have money, i dont have credit card. the only thing i have is COMMON SENSE thats why i am still here. some people seem to leave all those very COMMON senses behind everytime they board the plane to go to unfamiliar places. to be conned once is fine. there is alwyas the first time. but twice?? 3 times? 4?? go figure. for a person who keeps sticking his hands in the fire...get burned and never learns his lesson...that's him! ![]() maybe... he keeps coming back coz his sekz drive has encountered a "not available" status , his "hard drive" is experiencing "low bat", and he has "no change" to afford the services he is seeking where he is in California ![]() or maybe... he's simply on a sex tour??? hmmmm... ...pedos do that anything that can go wrong ![]()

hmm ok shouldn't do this but: 1. regarding prostitution: prostitution is the LEAST of problems of "corruption" in the phillippines, estimates 400,000 sex workers which is negligible compared to say thailand for example and most western countries. 2. the hostage things is nothing!! i mean every election in the philippines according to the primary newspapers in the country at the time of the recent elections dozens if not hundreds of political candidates are murdered, as i remember the headline it was something to the extent that its "cheaper now" to have your opponent murdered than to "buy" the votes. 3. there is a post on here on some abaonded blog taht no one commented on which i will go back and try to find later which is i think an accurate assesment of the acutal "corruption" situation in the phillipines. 4. i have a post on here somewhere in response to someones blog which gives a complete account of my assesment of "negative" realities of phiilippines from my experince: the bloggers found my comments offensive i guess but i thought they were balanced and realistic and ceratinly in line iwth the piece i am referencing in #3. 4. yes philippines people are the "workers to the world"; i have tried to tell people in the past to stay at home for various reasons but one of them being if all the "good" people leave to go send money home then there will not be anyone left in the country but the "bad" or "corrupt". 5. the dispropotionally experinced hardships of the world economic meltdown of the last few years have seriously impacted the phillipines and are more likely for negative realities than any general "corruption". i was shocked when i saw some economic numbers (cia nubmers actually i think) as to how philippines has delcined relatieve to other asain economies recenlty, for americans the economic crises means moving in with your parents and hocking the big screen tv; for phlippine people it means you dont eat. 6. all that said, it is a huge frustration for non phlippine people attempting to send time in the country for its theoretic advantages (which i have listed elsewhere in "why the philippine") for these reasons: (taken from an ex-pats site and modified and expanded somewhat which i have posted previously on a travel site): in general this quote from an expat writer remains basically sound: "The reasons for expats departing after moving to "paradise" are varied, but the most common I've experienced are: Inability to adapt to Philippine culture, to include inability to accept corruption as society's "norm," pervasive dishonesty, constantly being overcharged for goods and services, constant attempted scams, and expats often being viewed as a "walking ATM machine;" heat / humidity / typhoons; massive poverty;" the three most common phrases in the philippines are: "not available" "no change" and "low bat" everything here is always "not available", "no change" and "low bat". these factors alone are enough to defeat most of one's purposes in being here. all the things that seem desirable; cheap living, beautiful beaches, sweet women, warm weather, enlgish speaking people (to the english speaking me desirable), in reality are fantasies that will usually leave you stranded and broker than you were. the legendary robert on bantayan (absent this trip but apparently building a new resort and reopening white sands soon) tells a much more "built up" version of this story: how do you leave the philippines with a million? come with ten million. the phillipines should be taken in small doses and infrequently, each time i come for me things get worse and i never solve one problem from experience without a new one emerging. for young backpackers with no worries who are willing to go with the flow it might be ok (tho i have known very young people both american and European who were really pissed about the normal everyday challenges here, much more so than i who just expect them.) that being said: i will be coming back to the phlippines in a few weeks, because of the usual impossiblity of actually getting anyone there to adctually do what they say they will and for all the reasons of dishonesty (often masked as "saving face") and duplicity and other negative reasons i will have no place to stay for the frist two weeks; at least i will be going there, heading in that direction having no idea where i am going to be. the person i was going to see at the last minute now says only "we'll see" and suggests a reduction in my time visiting them, the bottom line being my plans are entirely up in the air do to the vaciliations and irresponsiblity which is typical of phillipine people in western eyes. nonetheless; as i have also pointed out elsewhere: even incorporating and conceeding all these difficulites it is still at least a familar exeripence and therefore in that comofrtablable, a familiar poison if you will. to keep doing the same things when they fail time after time is not necsairlly a sign of insanity but just a sign of acceptance; and even facotring in all thoes costs and difficulties it is still a more affordable and pleasurable experince than the jaded executive tanning of hawaii or the dreary celberity culture of la..and its attendeant costs only affordbale by the most celebrated. well mr please if all you see of pinas is the dark side why don't you go spend your precious money on some country who will drop to their knees to worship you. i just abhor people who see nothing in the world but negatives, they live it, they breahte it ! my two cents worth ! this is me...my heart and my soul...
