The road less traveled ......

I was 9 years old when Robert Frost died and even at that age, I'd read some of his poetry.
Having grown up in New Jersey, I could easily relate to his poems about rural farms, snowy woods and autumn days.

As the years have passed, I've developed a much deeper appreciation for his thoughts.
I can now see beyond the vivid landscapes that he painted so effectively with his words.

Typically, each week I travel for my job. As a young man, I always took the major Interstate highways when I drove. It was as if I had little time, when in fact I had my whole lifetime ahead of me.

Being older now, I am fully aware of my own mortality. Most of my life is now in my rearview mirror and I have learned to drive slower and take the back roads.

This week, I had to drive back to the New Orleans airport from Jackson, Mississippi. Instead of taking I-55 and driving the 200 miles in 3 hours, I took the old state highway #51 and it took me 6 hours, but I have no regrets.

There is something very enlightening about taking a leisurely drive through the backroads of rural America. It affords us the opportunity to see things as they once were and maybe even as they should be.

As we grow older we realize that all too soon we are looking at our lives in the rearview mirror.

Whether we speed through life on an interstate or take the backroads is a personal choice. But, in the end, we shall all come to the end of the road.

I fully comprehend what Robert Frost tried to convey in that well known poem.

I know not what course others shall take in life, but as for me .... I will continue to plan my route wisely and savor the remainder of my journey always taking "the road less traveled", as it HAS made "all the difference".

Esmer,

We all choose the roads that we travel in life.

Choose wisely, for you shall not pass this way again.
