43% of pinas population survive on two $2 per person per day,14.8% live on $1 per person per day,unbelievable isnt it?Check out online stats Theres a footbridge/crossing over Gen Maxilom ave just off Fuente osmena in Cebu,I cross it whenever I am in Cebu,50-60 times in the last 20 years,and the number of street-kids sleeping at night on the footbridge is heartbreaking but more sadly is increasing yearly

Every single time I visit I see the chasm between rich and poor widening...............
| ||
|
Any suggestion or insight that might help narrow the gap between the rich and the poor?

Hey,your from Cebu so you know the footbridge I am talking about right?And your right,sometimes entire families sleeping on cardboard beds,especially on the opposite side of Gen Max Ave to Robinsons near the DVD stalls at night. I visited the three main pinoy cities last month,manila(massive street kid problems)Cebu(not as bad)and Davao(barely noticeable,but this may be due to the so called,Davao Death Squads)all are in drastic need of some sort of social re-development,and a total shake-up in local governmental structures.

Yes, I know the footbridge that you are talking about..and like what you said it's not only happening in Cebu but almost anywhere else in the country... a lot of people are homeless.

Its strange Odette,but get out into the provinces and no-ones homeless,they are all living in family homes,its the people who gravitate towards the cities who often end up living on the streets when they realise the pavements arent really made of gold,I remember years ago meeting an american living on the streets of Manila

I have seen street-kids all around the world Odette,some countries have a lot more than Pinas,I have been to pinas often enough to realise the best outweighs the worst.Its strange but the most hospitable people I meet are those with the least to give,badjao,residents of tondo etc,got lots of good memories
| ||
|
I bet this problem is universal but we can at least lessen if not eliminate, I'm glad that even with the misfortunes of my brother Filipinos you are able to gather some good memories. True, the least are more hospitable and friendly than those who have, they just find sheer joy in seeing foreigners in the country, I guess honored by the visit. The rich with all its arrogance, won't even care to give a smile, well, I think not all but there may be some.

A massive clean-out in Manilas halls of power are needed to facilitate change Odette,cant see it improving dramatically in my lifetime,if anything its spiralling downhill,all we can do is our own little bit,I am putting a relative through UNI in the hope she will work abroad,but isnt it sad she has to leave the country she loves just to earn a crust?

|
In this regard, the filipino people as a whole must see that what they have put to power aren't really doing their jobs for the vast majority but some only for their own interests and agenda. The change that we expect should start from within, but second thought, if the stomach is empty and the soul is desperate, I wonder if people would really care, wouldn't it be just a struggle for survival?

It IS a struggle for survival,I have been in situations where self-preservation overshadows EVERYTHING,and in such instances politics was the LAST thing on my mind,I was just concentrating on making it unscathed through the next few minutes I chatted to loads of people in Pinas,they were ALL disheartened by their so called "Leaders",but once these people are in seats of power they act like leeches,clinging on till they have fattened,had their fill,and then they drop off having sucked some of the lifeblood from their hosts. Aspreviously stated,change will only begin when an HONEST president is elected,and Icant envisage thatin the forseeable future,can you?

|
I have lived in this country for 45 years and all I have seen is history repeating itself, promises, promises, then they are elected into power, then broken promises...graft, corruption, the country in quagmire of poverty, helpless, helpless, helpless, helpless...so sad.

Pinoy politicians are jokes to be honest,and one branch of your political pyramid I never understood the need for are barangay captains?No-where else in the world has them,do they actually have a use?Or are they just there to take one more bite of the cake? Are they actually needed?If so why dont western countries have them?
| ||
|
Personally I think there is a need for a barangay captain, the people in the barangay is being represented by the captain in their meetings with the mayor.

Doesnt it just complicate things?Do they ever actually solve issues?
| ||
|
I think they do have a share of importance, for example little troubles between people in the barangay, the captain serves as the moderator when they try to settle disputes or feuds. The barangay captain looks into the needs of the barangay and bring the matter to the higher office, but of course having them adds to the budget, and we cant do away with the little kickbacks they get from whatever undertaking they undergo.
