Inday Phenomenon

'Inday' means 'young lady' among Visayans, similar to 'dalaga' among the Tagalogs. 'Inday' is not something a Tagala (raised up north) would like to be called because of its stereotypes. In many households, 'inday' is synonymous to maid, sunburnt-skinned, uneducated, and coming from a poor family in the province.

The Inday Phenomenon is about to change this stereotype as text addicts and bloggers continue to pass on Inday's famous quotes and insights about things like sex, homecooked meals, values, education, politics, religion, etc., using her secret weapon - her perfect use of academic English, coupled with her demonstration of use of highfalutin vocabulary that makes people's noses bleed. Those familiar with the new Inday now think of sophisticated, smart, and yes, hOt house help.

The origin of Inday, Ang Sosyal na Katulong (the high-class maid) can not be traced. However, recently, I encountered a blog called 'Blog ni Inday' that shows her as a mestiza in a skimpy leather uniform, and which gives Inday's impressive background below.

Name: Inocencia “Inday” Binayubay
Age: 18
Parents: Aling Seling & Mang Andoy
Siblings: Iying, Itoy, Ikling, Lando (need DNA confirmation)

Education:

* De LaSalle University (Business Management, scholar)
* Ateneo de Manila Law School
* Asian Institute of Management
* Training Center for Culinary Arts (affiliate chef)
* University of Santo Tomas (BS in Nursing)
* Oxford University (BA in English and Literature - 1 year only)

Highschool: P. Gomez Highschool (Valedictorian, Best in English)
Elementary: Sta. Monica Elem. School (Valedictorian, Best in Dancing)

Awards:

* TOYM awardee (2006)
* Nobel Prize winner (2006)
* Pulitzer Award for Literary Arts (2007)

Work Experience - 3 years, household service manager (katulong), Mr & Mrs. Montemayor.

Hobbies:
Blogging, Nail Spa, Window Shopping at Greenbelt, listening to my iPod.

Apparently, many Filipinos take Inday as more than a joke. Some are offended because they believe that the new 'Inday' is a misrepresentation of the real inday, and that she is an insult to the general Filipino intellect. Some challenge the possibility of her background, and her opting to be a house help, update her blog, and listen to her i-pod in spite of her education. Now that tells a lot about the Filipinos, especially the youth of today. We see in her a technologically updated chimini-aa.

I see myself in Inday sometimes especially when I update my blog. lol. I see different Filipinos in her, too. I see intelligent Filipinos who can not make up their minds about what course in college to take. I see in her Filipinos who take up BS Nursing so that they can go abroad, for whatever reason they might have. I see the flirty girls in make-up and skimpy outfits who develop their looks and are more concerned about their toe nails looking neat, rather than developing their brains or practicing what they have finished. I see in her intellectuals who are proud to make people look stupid because they know the terminologies of physics or law, but at the end of the day she is still someone who serves her amos (employers). The new Inday represents a lot of different people in the country, I believe.

And yet another blog gives insights about another angle of the whole Inday phenomenon. It talks about another interesting fact about the status of English proficiency in the country. The Social Weather Station attests to the fact that English proficiency in the country has drastically declined. Inday's most powerful tool in creating and maintaining a more 'respectable' image, one that gradually crumbles the stereotype, is her proficiency in English, a tool she uses to get across her messages. Need I say more?

I am smitten by Inday myself. She brings a good laugh at the end of a stressful day. So go on, read that text message your contact forwards you, and be part of a probable stereotype-changing phenomenon that is Inday.

Please feel free to share your Inday jokes below for the sake of those who are not in the PI and are not familiar with Inday. Let's all share laughter.

My auntie is called Inday. I understand some Bisayan because of my family, hence why I have a blog on Bisayan origins.

I remember just abbreviating or shorten 'Inday' to 'day'. The male equivalent is 'dodong' or 'dong'.

Thanks sis for this update on this phenomena.

Hi there Tris! Thanks for gracing my blog with your presence and for the compliment. 'Inday' can be a term of endearment. At home in the south we call our maids inday, too. In Manila, we call our maids 'yaya' or 'adeng'- the Ilocano equivalent of the Visayan version.

Oh now I understand your entries Bisayan entries. 'Day' is also used in the PI. You're right about 'Dodong'. If you check 'Blog ni Inday', Dodong is being linked to Inday, which would probably turn out to be a significant character in the story. Don't worry. We'll let you in the hype.

I found some of the written information funny such as household service manager (katulong).

My writings seem all silly but they all link in an abstract way.

How are you? Hope you had a good weekend.

Thanks for this. There have been several 'politically correct' terms for the 'katulong'. The 'mayor doma' refers to the head (usually the most seasoned in a household) of a group of HSMs. But these terms are not popularly used, if I'm not mistaken.

Lol. I agree she is witty. A sad reality is that many educated, even degree holders, decide to work abroad as 'katulongs' for dollars. Not that it's wrong to be one, but these people contribute to brain drain in the country. So did you follow her advice?

"One day Katrina Halili went to see if she's still FHM's #1. She picked a mag & read it. All of a sudden she threw the mag & shouted,

'Punyeta! Sino si Inday?' (Curse in Filipino. Who is Inday?

It is a sad fact. Similarly, a cousin was refused entry to the US as a nurse because her last name was Moslem. At least, this was the only reason the family can think of. This was during the time when the Abus were just starting to surface.
