Happy Birthday, Mama Mary!

Did you go to church today? I did. I was on my way out the building to smoke when I saw a sign on the wall to my left that said 'NILC Mass at 12:15'. I took the turn and hurried down the steps as I heard a familiar Marian tune. I guess the priest was excited to start the mass before the announced time.

Anyway, in a way I felt happy to be there. I felt good to still know the tunes and lyrics of songs imposed on us by the RVM sisters back in my elementary and high school days. I can't help but notice that many seats were empty as compared to the masses I used to attend when people crowded the back because there were no more seats available.

During homily, I listened to the priest with his broken English, and I again wonder why priests rarely talk in the vernacular. But it was a good homily. Boring but good. I remember another priest's homily when the word of God was compared to a wife's cooking. Oftentimes, we do not remember the word of God, just as the husband does not remember what his wife cooked everyday. But he remembered that the cooking was good and that the meals nourished him, just like the gospel to the people. That was why I found myself there - I was getting my spirit nourished.

Today is Mama Mary's birthday. This is her way of calling me back to her - not as a little girl anymore, but as a woman and a mother myself. My presence in the mass today was my gift to her.

Happy birthday Mama Mary!

Sis,

I did go to church at noon time took off work coz of appts. While sitting there in my whole entire life never knew it was Mary's birthday. So, it has been very enlightening. Only knew Jesus. It was wonderful because this lady pinay brought her red/yellow stem roses for Virgin Mary. First the it was in the hall the rosary and moved into the church. There's a renovation going on in Our Lady of Peace. After the noon mass everyone was led out of the church for more work.

[I God is pure love...

I'm glad to be God's instrument for reminding you about the importance of keeping our faith. Yes, it's sad to see those empty seats. It's like that in any church I go. They're never packed anymore. It's either there are so many churches or people are busy with 'more important' things.

That's ok, sis. I didn't know it was Mary's birthday either. I admire people who know these dates, and remember to offer something like a flower. Thanks for sharing!
