my balikbayan box... i am still busy filling up my balikbayan box. it contains christmas presents for my family, relatives, friends, godchildren and neighbors in the philippines. i have been working on it for the last three months and i feel that the more i buy stuff to fill it up, the more i discover that i still need "bottles of this", "cans of that" and "boxes of those." it's no joke being from a big family. i always have to play fair. if i buy a sister a bottle of perfume, i must also get some for the rest of the siblings. otherwise, they would say in silent chorus, "bakit wala kami?" (why don't we have perfume?). oh, my, i don't want to hear any complain. so the standing rule is, what one gets, everybody gets. putting name tags on each item is also a lot of work. but it's wiser to do it for easy identification and distribution. along with all these labeled/named stuff, as usual, i would slide into the box some computerized personal letters for each of my family. there's also this general letter in a coupon bond that says "whoever has complain/s, please call me overseas," in huge fonts. of course, it's just some sort of a joke. i plan to send the box either end of this month or first week of november. i only have a week to go. right now, it's still one fifth empty. it only means i have to go to Costco again. i have bought almost everything the past couple of weeks--- from shirts/tops to shoes and socks, from perfume to hand sanitizer, from canned goods to cereal--- and i wonder if i can still find items my family would enjoy. for sure, a big pack of toilet paper just to fill the box is a stupid idea. |

We know the feeling Ate. Trying to be fair is tough to a huge family like ours too. Maybe you should leave a reminder that it is up to the receiver to appreciate and be grateful or not and that you have done more than enough to try to please them and have given your gifts a lot of thought and effort. If only they know how you worked to earn the money too. there's also this general letter in a coupon bond that says "whoever has complain/s, please call me overseas," in huge fonts. of course, it's just some sort of a joke. I hope they have humour. Hope you all have a happy occassion.
