Kung Sakali Man

Its raining outside… hard… I mean really hard. Here I am in front of the screen, socks… undershirt on top of a sweater… over comforters….daaaaaaang, I look like an Eskimo in this beard… feverish.

Yesterday was rough. And I heard this song on one of those trikes that passed by. It’s a song that my brothers nanny use to sing in the ate 70’s. as I recall it was first sung by pabs dadivas--- then mon delrosario… I loved singing this song then. She introduced me to the likes of Boyfriends, Nail clippers, Hagibis, the Manila Sounds, rey valera…

I remember singing this song, together with Kuya May and jesse… and July too. I think I was 8 at the time, and had my first guitar… they had this shed under July’s star-apple tree. We were jamming to the songs of Queen, Billy Idol’s Blue jeans, Billy Joel’s Honesty, Michael Jackson’s Shes out of My life… the songs were endless, they were so good at playing the guitar over a bottle of Gin. Man, I was often asked to get something wheneva they would try to light up a “Jamaican-cigar”. We talked about the stories behind the songs we sang. My dad was ok with it, I was hanging out with “Jamaican wannabe’s”, I was 8, they were in their 20’s…

But what struck me with this song is the story behind it. A young struggling artist, Marvic Sotto was trying to woo a wealthy woman… Vic, together with Brother Tito and friend Joey, were really trying hard. Vic wrote this song for Joey Albert, she was in her teens but belonged to a very prominent family. He didn’t stand a chance. Joey was being fixed for marriage to some wealthy guy…

The lines of the song reminded me of how much and what I had to go through in life and how Vic took life in stride… a few years back, it was not divulged in public, Vic was suffering from blood disease. He fought it. And very little number of people knew what he is was battling with. Cancer.

I saw him sing this with Aisa Seguerra in. Vic was plump in steroids. He had his hair shaved so that people wouldn’t notice he was going through chemo. Best yet, it was the very first time that he sang it in public. Viewers thought that it was just a Saturday thing that the program do with aiza, janno, and ogie. What the viewers didn’t know, it was some sort of a “goodbye” for Vic. Tony Tuvierra had to make it right. In between the song, a cancer-surviving Joey Albert came out from the background and placed her hand over Vic’s shoulders. It was touching. Being a cry baby and all, in my rocking chair--- I felt that love. Vic dropped a single tear, didn’t stop strumming, but his voice faltered--- then he made that famous moniker that only Vic could do. Camera pans out… with Vic and Joey Albert hugging…

This is for all the Vic Sotto’s and Joey Albert’s… giving everything they have for life… battling their way through… and hoping to get that tiny glint of hope to achieve BLISS.
For those who struggle in the name of LOVE…

Buhay ko ay sa iyo lamang
Hindi magbabago ang isip ko
Tunay ang pagtingin
Sana’y gayon ka rin giliw

At kung sakali man ikaw
ay mayroon ng ibang minamahal… minamahal
at kung sakali man tuluyan
ng mawalay ang pag ibig mo… sa piling ko

at kung sakali mang magdusa
ito’y aking matitiis
maghirap man o maghinagpis
baka sakaling mahal mo pa ako

di mo ba maunawaan
pag ibig na inalay ko sayong tapat
pagkat ako ngayon
nangangamba sa iyo giliw
chorus twice

at kung sakali mang magdusa
ito’y aking matitiis
maghirap man o maghinagpis
baka sakaling mahal mo pa ako

ohhhhhhh
ohhhhhh

song is in the playlist… interpreted by Wency… Daang, I spent an hour to get the chords, words and inflect right…

yup it is madam fantasiamore...

that even though years passed, joey and vic went expressing the love... Joey got back withthe song Ikaw lang ang mamahalin for vic...

joey had both mammoplasty... vic is still fighting. he had a bone marrow transplant from Val Sotto last year december. they just said that Vic got injured in the Lastikman episode thats why he was walking in a cane...

the individual story's of these two is remarkable... too bad that Vic is so privy... i hope someday he would let people know...

thank you very much po for coming in my "world"...

I hope he is ok...he is still struggling... saw him early this year, last april, for his shots at East Ave Med... it was the time they lessened his prednisone intake, thats why he doesnt look "stouty" from that med...

thanks for coming back, ate odette...
